I am sure you would have an experience where you end up running late for a meeting or work and trying to hail a cab.
Or had an experience of calling the driver to figure out where he or she is while waiting at your pickup point?
Well, AI has fast tracked its way into the field of transportation.
Like the Tech Layoffs, are the drivers working for Uber and other cab rental companies going to be out of their jobs?
The Perks of AI in Transportation
Tech Giants such as Tesla and Waymo are testing and rolling out self-driving cars across the globe which we used to see in science fiction movies and TV.
Using Advanced Route Optimization technologies data collection from our car GPS sensors, they can do traffic pattern prediction as well to suggest areas where users are comfortable to do carpooling while commuting.
This helps to reduce the transportation cost as well help the environment through lesser carbon footprint.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Great, another tech ‘revolution’ that promises to solve all our problems.”
AI-driven Cars are Safe…Or Are They?
Traffic Accidents will be as rare as a politician keeping their promises. Now you can cruise through the roads without hitting a traffic light, while you relax in the back catching up on your favourite TV show or a work presentation instead of muttering curses at the car in front of you.
But there will also be some safety and regulatory policies to be streamlined for situations like the responsibility of an accident involving an AI- driven car.
How do we program these vehicles to make split-second moral decisions such as injuring an animal on the road vs hitting against another human or a vehicle?

There will also be economic disruptions for those millions of people who are driving to make a living.
Considering the significant cost savings driverless technology could bring, it appears few jobs are secure. Which professions should be most worried?
What AI Can’t (And Maybe Never Will) Be Able to Do
While AI may be able to navigate roads and optimize routes better than humans, there are elements which an AI is yet to achieve.
This includes having a friendly conversation with a chatty cab driver, the local knowledge of a country and personal recommendations, the human touch in handling unusual situations or special requests from passengers.
These are the intangibles that keep many people coming back to traditional human driven transportation services.
Striking the Sweet Spot Between AI & Humans
The AI revolution in transportation is undoubtedly coming, but it doesn’t necessarily spell the end for Uber, taxis, etc.
Instead, we’re likely to see a period of coexistence and adaptation. The key will be finding the right balance between technological efficiency and the human touch.
