Artificial Intelligence has been conquering new avenues every day. The university announced in a press release in December that researchers at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), Abu Dhabi, have created an AI system capable of accurately replicating human handwriting.¬†This technology is based on a transformer model, a sophisticated type of neural network that can mimic a person’s handwriting style from just a few samples.

This breakthrough has a range of potential applications. It can be a boon for individuals who cannot write due to physical constraints, offering them a new way to communicate. Moreover, it has the potential to decipher difficult handwriting, like that of doctors, and could be used in personalized advertising, opening new avenues in marketing strategies.

“We’ll have to create public awareness and develop tools to combat forgery,” said Hisham Cholakkal, an assistant professor for computer vision at MBZUAI. “It’s like developing an anti-virus for a virus.”

The innovation has been recognized with a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office, reflecting its uniqueness and potential impact. The new AI system shows high proficiency in English and has promising results in French, though it encounters challenges with Arabic.

Despite this being a major advancement in the AI world, the newly developed handwriting AI system has been met with concern. Many believe that it’s a new way of breaching users’ privacy. People are also concerned that it can be used for forgery.

The researchers recognize these risks and stress the importance of developing robust security measures and raising public awareness to prevent misuse. Looking to the future, the team at MBZUAI is keen on exploring commercial applications and is actively seeking collaborations to develop further and enhance the technology.
