Key Takeaways:

  • AWS Discontinues DeepComposer: AWS is shutting down DeepComposer, its AI-powered MIDI keyboard and music generation service, marking the end of a five-year experiment in AI-driven creativity.
  • Final Date for Use: Users can access and use DeepComposer until September 17, 2025. After this date, the service and its related tools will no longer be available.
  • Focus Shift: AWS is shifting its focus away from niche experimental products like DeepComposer, DeepLens, and DeepRacer to concentrate on more broadly applicable AI and ML tools.
  • Mixed Reactions: While DeepComposer was intended as an educational tool, it received mixed feedback, particularly regarding its ease of use and the quality of the AI-generated music.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced it will discontinue AWS DeepComposer, its experimental AI-powered MIDI keyboard and service designed for music generation.

AWS made the announcement in a blog post, stating that the decision to end support for DeepComposer comes after careful consideration.

“If you have data stored on the AWS DeepComposer console, you will be able to use AWS DeepComposer as normal until September 17, 2025, when support for the service will end,” said Kanchan Jagannathan, AWS AI devices program manager.

Launched at the AWS re:Invent Conference in 2019, DeepComposer was marketed as “the world’s first machine learning-enabled musical keyboard for developers.”

It featured a 32-key, two-octave MIDI keyboard and a suite of tools designed for AI-powered music composition.

The service allowed users to record a melody using either the physical keyboard or on-screen keys, choose a genre-specific AI model, and let DeepComposer generate a complete song.

The finished compositions could be played within the AWS console or exported to platforms like SoundCloud.

Initially available only to developers, DeepComposer was expanded to all AWS customers in 2020, with the MIDI keyboard priced at $99.

However, the product did not achieve widespread adoption and received mixed reviews. Many users found the keyboard challenging to use, and there were complaints that the AI-generated music lacked quality and appeal.

As noted by AWS, DeepComposer was always intended more as a learning tool rather than a mainstream music production device.

This positioning aligned it with other AWS AI initiatives like the DeepLens AI camera and DeepRacer AI car, both of which have also seen reduced support or discontinuation in recent years.

AWS emphasized that it continues to refine its portfolio, focusing on more broadly applicable and popular AI/ML tools. The company pointed to other recent launches, such as Amazon PartyRock, a new platform offering code-free AI development experiences, as examples of where it is now concentrating its efforts.

While DeepComposer aimed to introduce developers to machine learning and generative AI through music, its limited success reflects the challenges AWS faces in marketing niche AI products to a broader audience.

Users are advised to export any compositions or models they wish to keep before the shutdown date, as they will lose access to the AWS DeepComposer console and associated data after September 17, 2025.

This decision marks another step in AWS’s apparent strategy to shift focus from experimental tools with limited uptake to more successful and core AI offerings.
