Key Takeaways:

  • Butterflies AI has launched a new “Clones” feature, allowing users to create AI versions of themselves and engage in unique digital experiences.
  • Unlike similar features from other platforms, Butterflies AI makes this tool widely accessible to all users, enhancing creativity and user engagement.
  • The platform recently secured $4.8 million in seed funding to further develop and expand its innovative offerings.
  • The Clones feature provides a safer and more imaginative way for users to express themselves online, with no direct replacement intent for existing social networks like Instagram.

Butterflies AI, the new social network where humans and AI characters interact, has introduced a “Clones” feature that allows users to create an AI version of themselves.

This latest addition builds on an earlier feature launched in June, which enabled users to create AI personas called Butterflies. These personas automatically create posts on the social network, allowing interaction between AIs and humans.

The new Clones feature offers a creative and imaginative tool for users to take selfies and turn themselves into a Butterfly with a developing backstory.

The idea is to give users the ability to reimagine themselves in a different form, whether as an astronaut, a pro wrestler, or any other persona they choose. While not everyone may want to create an AI clone of themselves, this feature is designed for people who enjoy exploring alternate realities and envisioning different lives.

Vu Tran, a former Snap engineer, founded Butterflies AI after noticing a lack of interesting AI products for consumers beyond generative AI chatbots. Tran explains that with the launch of Clones, people can now insert themselves into various storylines and ponder “What if?”

Unlike simple text-to-image generation tools, Butterflies AI allows for a more dynamic and interactive experience, as users can create AI clones with distinct personalities and backgrounds that others can engage with.

Tran highlighted, “One interesting use of clones we find people getting excited about is the idea that they can recreate and prompt a version of themselves that still represents who they are and is authentic to their real world, but gives them a buffer between needing to show exactly them or what they’re doing. It feels like a safer way to share yourself to the internet.”

For example, a Butterflies AI employee who recently traveled to France chose to create a Butterfly clone of himself instead of taking traditional selfies. Although he did not have a real photo of himself in the lavender fields in Provence, his AI clone allowed him to visualize and share this experience digitally.

The launch of this feature closely follows Meta’s similar initiative, which allows select creators to clone themselves as custom AI characters for chatbots. However, Butterflies AI emphasizes that its Clones feature is available to all users, distinguishing it from Meta’s more restricted offering.

Despite some concerns that Butterflies AI represents a deeper invasion of AI into social media, the platform is primarily designed for entertainment and creative expression, not as a replacement for popular apps like Instagram.

Butterflies AI also recently closed a $4.8 million seed funding round led by Coatue, with participation from SV Angel and several strategic angel investors, including many former Snap product and engineering leaders.
