Google, led by CEO Sundar Pichai, recently announced a significant transformation in its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, marked by the rebranding of its AI chatbot Bard to Gemini.
This change includes the introduction of the Gemini Ultra 1.0 language model and the launch of the Gemini Advanced subscription service.
This service, priced at $19.99 per month, aims to provide users access to Google’s most advanced AI capabilities, enhancing their experience with complex tasks and multitasking.

The strategic shift was unveiled in February 2024, signifying a new chapter in Google’s AI development. The rebranding to Gemini is not just a name change but represents a more unified approach to Google’s AI offerings.
Gemini will be accessible through a dedicated app, with an option for Android users to set it as their default AI assistant. This strategic move subtly shifts the focus from Google Assistant to Gemini, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing its AI technology.
The Gemini Advanced subscription is positioned as a direct competitor to ChatGPT Plus, promising superior AI features for both consumer and enterprise users.
Sundar Pichai, chief executive officer for both Google and its parent company, Alphabet, said, “For years, we’ve been investing deeply in AI as the single best way to improve Search and all of our products. In December, we took a significant step on our journey to make AI more helpful for everyone with the start of the Gemini era, setting a new state of the art across a wide range of text, image, audio, and video benchmarks.” He further added: Our mission with Bard has always been to give you direct access to our AI models, and Gemini represents our most capable family of models. To reflect this, Bard will now simply be known as Gemini.
Key facts and figures surrounding this development include the capabilities of the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model, which handles intricate tasks like coding and logical reasoning.
The subscription service, priced competitively, is designed to offer enhanced AI capabilities compared to its predecessors. Furthermore, Google plans to integrate Gemini across its suite of products, including popular applications like Gmail, Docs, and Sheets.
This integration suggests a potential shift in focus from the existing Google Assistant to the more advanced Gemini AI on Android devices.
The launch of Gemini marks a pivotal moment for Google as it consolidates its AI efforts under a single, more cohesive brand. This strategic move not only enhances Google’s product offerings but also positions the company to compete more effectively in the rapidly evolving AI industry, signaling its commitment to being an AI-first company.
