Jennifer Lopez’s latest Netflix film, “Atlas,” has ignited major conversation for its storyline and underlying themes regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). The film’s reception has been mixed, with critics and audiences divided over its execution and message.

Beyond the screen, Lopez has been vocal about her concerns with AI, particularly regarding unauthorized uses of her likeness in advertisements, adding a real-world dimension to the film’s fictional narrative.

She said, “I think this movie does a good job of showing how AI could go incredibly wrong, and this is how it could go really right,” Lopez told me at the film’s Los Angeles premiere.”

“Atlas,” directed by Brad Peyton, features Jennifer Lopez as a data analyst who must save Earth from an evil AI robot. The film explores themes of trust and AI’s dual-edged nature, presenting its potential benefits and dangers.

Lopez’s character, Atlas Shepherd, distrusts AI due to past traumas but must collaborate with an AI named Smith to thwart the malevolent Harlan, played by Simu Liu.

Lopez has shared her personal fears about AI, particularly regarding its misuse. She highlighted instances where AI-generated advertisements used manipulated images of her face to sell skincare products without her consent.

She said that she has seen the ads that are selling skincare that I know nothing about, using manipulated photos of her face covered in “wrinkles.” JLo added, “It’s really scary. Right away, we had them stealing our faces. So, yes, [AI] is really scary.”

Lopez emphasized the need for respect and caution in developing and deploying AI technologies.

Lopez further explained, “I think you should be respectful of AI…We have to be open to all possibilities. These movies that are talking about AI — especially this one — do a really good job of showing both sides.”

These concerns are particularly relevant in light of recent events in the entertainment industry. The misuse of AI to manipulate celebrities’ images and likenesses has become a pressing issue, prompting calls for stricter regulations and greater public awareness about the potential dangers of AI.

However, the critical reception of “Atlas” has been polarized. Some reviewers praise the film’s ambition and timely themes but criticize its execution.

The film has been described as a “ridiculous” attempt that fails to deliver a coherent message and is noted for its lack of depth, calling it a missed opportunity to explore AI’s impact meaningfully.
