OpenAI has partnered with Reddit to access real-time content from Reddit’s data API, enabling ChatGPT and other OpenAI products to surface discussions from the site.

This collaboration, similar to a previous deal Reddit signed with Google for $60 million, aims to enhance both platforms by integrating AI capabilities and introducing new features for users.

Reddit will provide OpenAI with access to its application programming interface (API), which offers real-time, structured, and unique content.

In return, OpenAI will deliver certain AI-powered features to Reddit users and moderators. Additionally, OpenAI will become an advertising partner on Reddit. This partnership is part of Reddit’s strategy to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional advertising.

“Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything.

Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman says.

The deal’s financial terms were not disclosed, and unlike the agreement with Google, there was no specific mention of using Reddit data for training AI models.

It is worth noting that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a major shareholder in Reddit, played a key role in the partnership’s approval by OpenAI’s independent Board of Directors.

With this news going viral, people worldwide shared their perspectives and opinions. Even Elon Musk has sarcastically commented under the official OpenAI Post!

The announcement has greatly impacted Reddit’s stock, which soared nearly 12% in extended trading. This reaction reflects investor confidence in the potential benefits of the partnership.

Reddit’s shares experienced a volume-backed breakout, closing above their record high at $74.90, opening the door for further price increases.

“We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with unique, timely, and relevant information,” OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap said in a statement.

This partnership comes when AI companies increasingly seek access to large datasets to improve their models. It also highlights ongoing legal and ethical challenges regarding using copyrighted material.

OpenAI and Reddit have faced scrutiny over data scraping and copyright issues, and regulators and stakeholders will closely watch this partnership.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which currently has knowledge limited to August 2023 for paid users and September 2021 for free users, will benefit from Reddit’s vast and dynamic content, making it more aware of current events and timely topics.

This integration is expected to provide real-time, user-generated insights, enhancing the interactivity and relevance of ChatGPT.

People don’t seem happy at all with this partnership!

These features aim to improve user engagement and the overall experience on Reddit, aligning with the company’s goal of fostering an open internet and building community, belonging, and empowerment online.

The deal is also notable for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s longstanding relationship with Reddit. Altman led Reddit’s $50 million Series B funding round in 2014 and invested an additional $60 million over two financing rounds during the pandemic-era tech rally.
