Quora AI Chatbot raised $75 million

In a remarkable development within the AI chatbot industry, Quora has successfully garnered a $75 million investment from the renowned venture capital firm, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), which is a private American venture capital firm. This funding is allocated for the enhancement of Poe, Quora’s innovative AI chat platform. Notably, this event marks Quora’s first fundraising effort in nearly seven years, highlighting the strategic importance of this initiative.

Since its inception, Poe has demonstrated substantial growth and potential in the AI chatbot domain. The platform allows users to create and interact with a diverse range of chatbots, covering an array of topics. The versatility and user-friendly nature of Poe have contributed to its impressive traction, evidenced by over 18 million installations and 1.2 million active monthly users as of October 2023.

Quora’s CEO, Adam D’Angelo, emphasized the company’s vision of fostering a thriving creator economy around AI chatbots. This move is a departure from the traditional ad revenue models, as seen on platforms like YouTube. Instead, Quora is focusing on empowering creators to monetize their AI bots.

D’Angelo expressed his anticipation that a significant portion of the investment will fuel the recently launched creator monetization program, which incentivizes individuals to design and integrate bots with the Poe AI chat platform.

Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo wrote in a statement, “We expect the majority of the funding to be used to pay creators of bots on the platform through our recently-launched creator monetization program.”

The latest funding round has placed Quora’s valuation at $500 million, a notable decrease from its previous valuation of $1.8 billion. D’Angelo attributes this adjustment to market shifts, including rising interest rates and increased capital costs. Despite this, Quora has been experiencing a surge in momentum, with record-breaking usage statistics and over 400 million monthly unique visitors, reinforcing its positive trajectory in the AI market.

Since its launch about a year ago, Poe has shown remarkable growth. The platform’s mobile app witnessed over 250,000 downloads in its first public month and has since seen a steady increase in user engagement. David George, a partner at a16z, highlighted Poe’s achievement, stating that it currently ranks among the top five largest generative AI-related properties. The platform has witnessed the creation of over 1 million bots, indicating its growing influence and potential in the AI sphere.
